Jet Johnson

Pigsheep: An effortlessly cool, tuneful and pretty creature

effortlessly cool, tuneful and pretty

A buttercup under the chin to tell if you like butter or not

A breeze blowing across the south face of a hill

A red leaf falling gently side to side towards the earth

A baby polar bear opening its eyes for the first time to the open tundra

A scribbled picture of a plane on the back of a folder.

The line between innocence and the whimsical is a thin one, and as a tightrope it's one which many bands would fear to walk. Some layer effects onto their voices to hide the lyrics which meant so much to them. Others look down and stamp on a pedal, layering the guitars in a wall of noise and feedback. That can be a fine thing in itself, to be pushed back by sheer volume from the stage.

But some bands choose to walk the tightrope. Most fall. A rare few don't. London based Jet Johnson are one of the few. Over the last three years they've effortlessly drawn comparisons to Piano Magic, Mazzy Star, Low, and Empress, released a string of well regarded singles (which picked up plays on John Kennedy's Xfm show and a few from the man himself, John Peel), and a mini album on the Errol label which garnered them even more plaudits.

The history of the band goes back before their short timeline. Caroline (Nesbø - Vox, Guitar) was once in a band called Peachfuzz who moved to London from Aalesund, Norway. Once in London, Caroline met now husband Gavin (Baker - Guitar) at a gig. He was charmed enough to grin madly at her all night until she pitied him and took him home. Originally from Frome in Somerset, Gavin plays in indie stalwarts Billy Mahonie as well as having his own solo project Meets Guitar and a transatlantic affair with Glider. Kevin Smith who drums on the recent releases, used to bash it out with Peel faves Reynolds, but is on leave in Japan. Tore (Skjulstad Bryhni- Bass, Vox) is the latest addition to the Jet Johnson sound.

Their first album  ‘Micropolitan’ was released in the UK during the autumn of 2003. The ‘Donnie’ single preceded it, an indie pop gem of the first order, all wistful vocals and lilting guitar lines, playful and elegant at once.

The album will see release throughout the rest of the World this year, currently being promoted by a new single ‘Death Song’. For the meantime, the band have made a move to Oslo, Norway and are currently writing new material and performing local shows there. Return tours to the UK are being planned, as well as select dates throughout mainland Europe.

"Le Jet (Plume Remix)" Download Single (Seriously Groovy/Soda)
Back with an upbeat number, released as a download single to coincide with the controversial 'Oil Wars' video that had its first airing on American TV the week of the elections. A highly contentious animation that takes us on a journey from Noah's Ark to suicide bombers via the beatings of Iraqi prisoners! Light relief is provided by the fantastically dancey "le Jet" as it pumps out hollow bass sounds and electro vibes. Staying just the right side of white funk. You can't help but shake your booty to this one.

"Death Song" CD EP (Seriously Groovy/Soda)
Follow-up single to Jet Johnson's poppy 'Donnie', both taken from their charming debut album 'Micropolitan'. A delightfully dark, melancholic song about all the different ways you can die. With a video to promote it, animated by RCA graduate Ebba Erikzon whose recent work includes Radiohead, the CD is backed with 3 exclusive tracks from our Norwegian lovelies and all packaged up in a lovely cardboard sleeve. "Death Song is one of the tracks off of the wonderful Micropolitan, so is therefore a great single which you must buy" Modestic

"Micropolitan" CD Album (Seriously Groovy/Soda)
‘Micropolitan’ is an album that is both elegant and warm, and evokes a feeling of youthful innocence. Caroline’s voice is haunting and emotive, and is backed to the hilt with care-free pop tunes and quiet melodies which caress the listener’s eardrums. Although jam packed with songs that could make a hardened criminal hark back to childhood days of riding a new bike through the park, the single ‘Donnie’ is an outstanding slice of quirk-pop perfection. "their debut album promises to be a celebration of fusionic style, various elements and fatale blend" Sascha S - Deo2.com

"Donnie" CD Single (Seriously Groovy/Soda)
‘Donnie’ is a single which arrives just in time for ice cream, days in the park, and the rest of summer. It’s a stunning pop paean to teenage yearning, young imagination and fan worship (of Donny Osmond). With its punchy indie pop dynamism, sweetly shimmering melodies and lilting vocals, 'Donnie' is likely to land it in many critics’ singles of the year charts. A worthy addition to any playlist, or record collection and previews forthcoming debut album ‘Micropolitan’. "'Donnie' is, quite simply, a delightful pop song that should be on the radio whenever the sun has its hat on, as it's deliciously understated, unpretentious and fun." Mike Diver - Logo Magazine
